IRM NEWSFebruary, 2008New Issue of the IRM Quarterly Available Online The Winter issue of the IRM Quarterly is now available. This issue takes us on a guided safari through the exchange jungle in the land of Hemo-ilmenite, led by intrepid explorers Karl Fabian, Suzanne McEnroe, and Peter Robinson. Also: Visting Fellows reports from Junshen Nie (Univ. of Rhode Island), Julie Bowles (Univ. of Hawai'i -- currently of IRM), and Sarah Brownlee (Univ. of California, Berkeley).
2008 International Conference on Rock Magnetism and its Earth Science Applications The conference will be held June 2-7, 2008 in Cargese, Corsica. ** The conference website is now available with further information on registration, abstract submission, and travel. The first announcement is still available here or in the Summer issue of the IRM Quarterly.
Santa Fe '06
Thanks to all the Paricipants; Santa Fe was a great success!
Look for an article on the proceedings of IRM's biennial conference on rock magnetism in the next issue of the "IRM Quarterly". Reid Cooper, one of the keynote speakers, was kind enough to make the slides from his presentation available. His talk, Kinetic Paths, Metastable States & Ferrite Nucleation: The Impact of the “Semiconductor Condition”, was well recieved.
Near-Single-Domain Standard Reference Material Is Now Available IRM is now distributing samples of Tiva canyon tuff dominated by single-domain titanomagntite. For further details of the tuff's magnetic properties see issue 16.1 of the "IRM Quarterly". If you would like a sample please email your request to: irm@umn.edu.
Preisach Models and FORC Diagrams as told by Roy Roshko One of the highlights of the Sixth Santa Fe conference on Rock Magnetism (See IRM Quarterly below) was the key note lecture by Professor Roy Roshko (Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg) on Preisach Models and FORC Diagrams. By popular demand, Roy has given us his lecture notes (.pdf file) to post on the web (best viewed with Acrobat 6). Visiting the IRM The IRM accepts applications for visiting fellowships twice a year; April 30th for visits from July through December and October 30th for visits from January through June. The visiting fellowship program offers funds for travel and free use of IRM equipment through a competitive proposal process. Shorter informal visits (usually up to 3 days) can be arranged by contacting Mike Jackson (irm@umn.edu). Sorry, informal visits are not eligible for travel funds. The Hitchhiker's Guide to Magnetism An online version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to Magnetism is now available. It is an excellent introduction to rock magnetism written by Bruce Moskowitz for the 1991 Environmental Magnetism Workshop here at the IRM
